This is used in the same way as a football rattle. The handle has two cogs which strike against thin strips of wood as the rattle is swung. The noise was loud enough to scare birds from the crop field. This particular item spent some time as an ARP rattle in World War II.

A Blue Bird typewriter with a Grey and blue body. Universal four row keyboard (QWERTY) with grey square keys. The typebars strike upwards and backwards from a horizontal position within a blue casing. 340mm wide x 350mm deep x 150mm high Width of carriage: 250mm.

A number 5 Blickensderfer, made in the USA (approx. 1897-1907) fitted into a wooden box. The typewriter has a three row ideal (DHIATENSOR) keyboard. The type is on a single drum shaped element that rotates to select the appropriate character. The drum strikes downwards and it is likely that the type would be visible. Contained within the box is another element and a small glass bottle (contents unknown). Inscription on badge above keyboard: No 5 BLICKENSDERFER NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE MADE IN U.S.A. Size in case: 325mm wide x 240mm deep x 170mm high. Width of carriage: 240mm.
