Wylam Dilly at Craghead Colliery in 1883 after restoration and before presentation to the Royal Scottish Museum. The Wylam Dilly was brought to Craghead by William Hedley jnr from Wylam in 1862 and it remained their until 1879. The engine was built in c1813 and shows George and William Hedley, fireman - W G Robson, driver W Smith and land agent W Armstrong. The engine weighed 8 tons, had 10" cylinders, a 20" stroke and the wheels were 3ft 6in in diameter. It had an oak frame. This engine was the second of two of the oldest locomotives in existence. The twin engine was"Puffing Billy". Craghead Colliery was only the second pit where locomotives took over the work of horses.
